Hunter’s Moon

The blood red moon orbited close to the Earth’s atmosphere. Its beams throwing off it’s orange red glow on everything it touched. Hunter crouched stealthily on the eves of the United Cross Church. His nostrils flaring with long steady breathes in. He chuckles to himself about the irony in his choice of perches. His eyes darting from the dark alleys to the dimly lit streets. Awaiting for the moment his thirst would be quenched. Just then a man appears staggering, talking loudly to nobody, but himself. He walks to the far edge of the building and drops to the asphalt. He conceals his self in the shadows of the night. The man draws closer Hunter can now hear his heartbeat. His lean muscular body tenses. Like a panther stalking the antelope he stays covered in the darkness until the precise moment of attack. The man nears the corner, Hunter quickly grabs him and drags him back into the shadows. The man tries to claw and fight his way free but to no avail. Hunter leans in slowly and inhales deeply then snarls bearing his razor sharp canines. The man pulls against his grasp, trying to pull away from this demon. “Where are you trying to go? You are between a rock and hard place.” Hunter sneers. “But you are safe from me at least.” He says letting the man hold on to the last part of his sentence. The man quivering says nothing as the yellow liquid runs down his leg and puddles. Hunter keeps his grasp but takes a step back, so not to soil his Gucci leather loafers. “You are tainted, I will not feed on the poisons that run through your veins.” “Tonight I am feeling merciful, if you promise to keep this little secret you will live.” He whispers. “But if you so much as whisper a word of me I will find you and I will not be as merciful. Do you understand me?” He looks at the man questioningly. The man tries to draw breathe in to speak but can not so he only shakes his head in agreement. Hunter smiles his canines now normal size, leans in and whispers ” I have your scent now, so it won’t be that hard to find you.” The man only nods. Hunter releases his grip and the man scurries off.

“What has happened to today’s society?” Hunter questions. “They revere me as a monster because I must feed on human blood to maintain my existence.” “Yet it is their own kind destroying their world peddling their goods, poisoning their bodies with cocaine, LSD, heroine.” “And I’m the monster?!?” He scoffs. The brisk nighttime wind is barely felt has he slowly and aimlessly saunters down the street.
